New Orleans & Jazzfest Recap (Part 1)

I’m back and it was amazing!  Sarah and I were there for four full days so I’m going to break this into four quick diary-style entries.  Hold on tight…

We left Madison about 5:30 PM on Wednesday and drove the Prius straight through, making it to downtown New Orleans at 8:30 AM on Thursday.  With some time to kill before the hotel room was ready we grabbed a light breakfast at local diner Commerce and wandered down the Riverwalk.  Then we headed into the French Quarter, where we stopped for some lovely beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe Beignet on Royal Street.  Then the rain came, through which we made our way back to the hotel to catch up (at least a little) on sleep.

Once refreshed, and with the rain mostly stopped, we headed to Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse to get our first live music with Roman Skakun‘s vibraphone trio – good stuff…

From there it was off to dinner at Feelings Cafe in the Marigny neighborhood, where we lounged on the outdoor patio and had fried artichokes, mushroom cakes, and a tasty fish topped with shrimp – delicious.  Then we headed over to Frenchman Street where we ran into our first street corner brass band – awesome…

Then we met up with some friends who were staying a block away and went to d.b.a. to check out CC Adcock & The Lafayette Marquis – pretty sweet…

By then it was pretty late so we decided to head back to the hotel, but not without first getting sucked into the party being thrown by The Upstarts at the Balcony Music Club – people havin’ a good ol’ time…

And that was Day 1 in New Orleans – chock full.  Tomorrow, first of three days at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival…
