Jazzfest Celebration With Second Line Video!
‘Why,’ you may ask, ‘the excitement?’ Well, today marks the start of the forty-fourth New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival! Annually spread over two weekends at the end of April (National Jazz Appreciation Month, you know), this is truly one of the greatest music festivals in the world. The city of New Orleans is absolutely wonderful for an infinite number of reasons, not least of which is its honor as the birthplace of jazz.
I’ve had the pleasure of attending Jazzfest twice before, and my personal anticipation for Jazzfest this year is at a fever pitch because I recently made plans to go back! The first time I went was seventeen years ago (to the day, in fact) and the last time I went Aaron Rodgers was drafted (that’s eight years ago and worlds away). Some acts I’m especially looking forward to next weekend are the Meters, Wayne Shorter Quartet (w/ Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, & Brian Blade), Galactic, The Black Keys, The Stanley Clarke/George Duke Project, Mardi Gras Indians, Los Lobos, New Orleans Hip Hop Project, Willie Nelson, Kumbuka African Dance & Drum Ensemble, and about a dozen brass bands. Plus, I know that there will be plenty of unexpected surprises 🙂 Also, I will be eating everything 🙂 🙂
I look forward to sharing the experience with you in upcoming blog posts. You can learn more about the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival here, and you can listen to New Orleans radio station WWOZ broadcasting from festival here., and AXS TV will be broadcasting performances live next weekend (May 3-5). Lastly, please enjoy my first video entry for the blog, a drum set interpretation of the New Orleans second line…
